12 Aug Water Bottles at Events

At every event, water is present. It is presented by plastic water bottles or water jugs on tables. They are available right away or through other vendors. Do you know how many water bottles are used at events? According to waterdocs.ca “In Ontario alone, one billion plastic water bottles are sent to the landfill every year” (2018). That is a huge number. So what can we do? What can we do to reduce the use of water bottles at events?

When I was planning and executing the YMCA of Stratford-Perth’s 150th Anniversary Celebration, we wanted to reduce the use of plastic water bottles. Yes the vendors would of had their own to sell, but we still wanted to reduce them. When meeting with the City of Stratford, I was introduced to the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA). The OCWA offers water buggies to have available at your event.

This water buggy was a great add to the YMCA event. Not only did we encourage the community to bring their own reusable water bottles, but it was free water at the event. The OWCA hooks up the water buggy to the municipal water line and that was all. We got to select which buggy we wanted out of two sizes. The larger one had both taps and water fountain taps to allow people to fill up and drink from it. It was great seeing a reduce use of plastic water bottles at your event.

The next time you’re planning an event, look at having a water buggy present. You can get in touch with the OWCA or see of any rental companies out there. Even if you have to spend money with a rental company, remember the outcome you have by reducing or eliminating the use of plastic water bottles at your event.
